First Week Of University – It Isn’t Survival Of The Fittest

First Week Of University – It Isn’t Survival Of The Fittest

Starting University is probably one of the most daunting things. You’ve moved to a new city, away from all your family and friends and you have to start anew. But so many people go through it and once they get used to it, it seems like nothing! Here are a few tips on surviving your first week at University.

If like me you moved into student accommodation, taking part in Freshers Week is a great to get settled into University life. I consider myself to be quite a shy person who doesn’t particularly like new people or new things, however when I moved away to student accommodation I knew I had to push myself to find friends. Freshers Week is a great opportunity as there are so many different events you can attend. Whether you enjoy the nightlife or are more of a stay-at-home kind of student, there’s something for everyone. I, myself met most of my friends through some of the Student Union events.

Not only are events organised by the SU (Barcoda, Cult Welcome Party, etc.), but meeting the people on your course is another great way to settle in. During Freshers, course inductions take place which allows you to find out about your course in more detail to reassure yourself of the type of work you will be doing and the levity of the workload. This is also a change but to also meet your lectures and voice any concerns you have about starting your course.

The most important thing to remember is not stress out or worry too much. Everyone starting University is in the same position as you and probably has the same worries and concerns. Speaking to others really does wonders and can reassure you that everything will be fine! Being a University student is very different, but sometimes different is good and while being at University, you’ll get to experience some great things!
