Mental Health and Animals

When I read the title of this brief, I knew I HAD to write it. I’m sure all animal lovers and owners can relate. 

I have grown up around animals for as long as I can remember. May it be fish, dogs, or bunnies. Right now? Proud owner of a bunny and two cats. Bet you never imagined mental health and animals to be put in the same sentence. If you haven’t, I’m going to go on a whim and say, you’ve never had a pet before. Go figure. 

First things first, we don’t deserve animals. That’s an agreement between all readers, yes? I don’t know about you, but what calms me down is sitting by my cats. Hearing their purr, watching them sleep. It is so relaxing. Or, in the middle of the night, when my window is open, I hear my bunny drinking out of her water bottle. I kid you not, it is the loudest thing. 

There’s something totally pure about a bond between an animal and a human. They are trusting you to take care of them, and in return, they give you love and affection. Look, your cat won’t cheat on you, and your dog won’t whisper all your secrets to your friends. It’s a different relationship. Clearly. 

But you will find that an animal can be there for you in ways that a person may not be capable of. You know, that if everyone else was to turn their back on you right now, you have something to turn to. Even if they do just blink up at you creepily. Mine, loves to head butt me, and it is adorable. It’s nice to know that, you know? Something to come home to and rant to. Something that has won your devotion simply by crying at you to give them food. 

Sometimes, what you need is someone, or something, to stand by you when your entire world is crumbling apart. And when I felt as if I couldn’t stop crying, my cat stayed by my side and rubbed herself up my entire leg until the tears stopped. 

There is this unspoken pact of, you are each other’s homes. They take full advantage of that, trust me. A companion for life, that’s what they call it.
