Self Care: Scrapbooking
I find arts and crafts quite therapeutic and one thing I particularly enjoy doing is scrapbooking. I was introduced to the concept when I was a child, along with my brother and sister, where we would sit at the dining room table with our scrapbooks and search through old magazines and catalogues finding images that we liked, cutting them out and gluing them down into our books. It would be messy but it was a great way to express our own interests.
We would often create wish lists with pages from the Argos catalogue and hope that our mum took note for Christmas presents.
As I got older, I used scrapbooking as a way to remember significant events in my life, for example, school trips as well as finishing school and college events. In those days, digital cameras were only just becoming a thing, so I would have to rely on taking photos with a disposal camera and then taking the film to be developed. You would often have to wait a few days for the photos and it was part of the fun of never quite knowing what images you’d get back!
Moving forward to the last few years, I have been fortunate enough to visit a number of cities in Europe. I decided after visiting Amsterdam in 2016 that I would make a scrapbook each time I visited a new European city. So far, I have books for Amsterdam, Lisbon, Budapest and Rome. I’m also going to add a scrapbook from my honeymoon to Mexico (although not a European city, it still holds incredible memories!). When I get around to it, I might try and backdate a few from years gone by.
Eventually I’ll end up with a catalogue of travel photos and memories that I can look back on. I like to hold onto brochures, receipts and tickets from anywhere I visit when I am in that country. It helps to remind me of exciting times and helps to keep me motivated and positive. I love travelling and can’t wait for my next adventure!
