Breaking Free from your school uniform

Breaking Free from your school uniform

As you make the transition between high school and most sixth form/colleges, you are confronted with a new rule that you probably haven’t faced before – not having to wear a uniform. You are finally given the freedom that you always wanted. Even if this seems like a wonderful concept at first, for some, the pressure of suddenly having to find outfits every day can be very daunting. In order to try and make the transition as stress-free for you as possible, I’ve listed some advice to guide you through.

DON’T OVERTHINK IT

Try not to think too much about what other people think. Although your instant thought may be that you will be judged for every fashion decision you make, people don’t take as much notice as you think they will. The primary aim of attending college is to learn, not to compete in who dresses the best.

EXPERIMENT & FIND YOURSELF

Use this opportunity to experiment with different styles to find what you feel comfortable and confident wearing. As you will realise, everybody has their own personal style that varies from day to day. You don’t have to dress a certain way to
fit in and soon you won’t think twice about just throwing on the most casual outfits each day.

DON’T OVERSPEND

Don’t feel pressured to buy branded clothes or to constantly buy new clothes. While it is probably a good idea to invest in a few basic pieces that you can create many outfits from, there is no need to constantly buy new clothes.

REPEAT OUTFITS

People often worry about trying not to repeat outfits. However, unless you have an endless flow of cash, it is unrealistic to achieve a new outfit every time. I’m certain that most people don’t realise if you wear an outfit multiple times.

STICK TO THE RULES

As well as being a liberating freedom, no uniform also comes with the rule of dressing appropriately as if you were in ‘a workplace environment’. Most schools don’t expect you to dress super smartly, but it is important to follow the rules and ensure that your outfits are suitable for school.

EMBRACE THE FREEDOM

Most importantly, have fun and stay true to yourself!
