SPYRO AND TOMB RAIDER

Remastered games have become a popular category within the gaming industry over the past few years with beloved childhood classics being given new generation graphics. This area of gaming is something I’ve been interested in for a while, so I thought I would share my experience of remastered games; specifically, Spyro and Tomb Raider.

When the latest Tomb Raider remaster was announced, I was initially against it as the trilogy of games on the PlayStation 2 (Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Tomb Raider: Underworld) was my favourite generation of Lara Croft. At the time, I didn’t want another remaster, but another game released that followed on from Tomb Raider: Underworld. It took a while before the recent remaster was something I wanted to play. It wasn’t until I watched my sister play the game that I realised I wanted to explore it for myself. When I started playing the 2013 Tomb Raider my opinion completely changed. I really liked the origin story arc this remaster went with; it added a refreshing stance to her story as she wasn’t the ‘Tomb Raider’ we all know and love but a uni graduate following in her father’s footsteps. This allowed for more character development in the later games especially in Shadow of the Tomb Raider which for me made the latest series more exciting
to play.

In terms of the Spyro remaster, I had a completely different reaction. As soon as it was announced, I couldn’t wait to play it as it was one of the first games I ever played. Playing the game and seeing how the developers transformed bland, basic worlds into detailed immersive worlds was jaw dropping. I felt I was being transported back to my childhood but at the same time was exploring a brand-new game. I couldn’t stop playing the first game, making sure I completed each level 100% before I moved onto the next one; I wanted to complete the game as much as possible. It even reminded me of how much I hated the flying levels, they are such a nightmare to complete! Although that might be because I’m not the most experienced gamer. Despite my hate for the flying levels, I really enjoy the Spyro remaster.
